A Study of the Validation of Figure Rating Scale and Bioelectrical Impedance for Evaluation of Obesity Level in Undergraduate Female Student
Kim Sook-Young

Abstract
Objective: This study was designed to validate rating scale for figure and bioelectrical impedance for obesity assessment.

Method: The validity of the figure rating scales(FRS) and bioelectrical Impedance(BI) were assessed by determining intercorrelations between the data of these instrument and the body mass index(BMI)/Broca¡¯s index. BMI was calculated from measured height and weight. Broca¡¯s index(%) was defined by (actual weight x 100/ideal weight).

Results: The data were collected from 156 subject(obese 23, non-obese 133). It was found that FRS score was correlated with the BMI(r=.736, P=.0001) and Broca¡¯s index(r=.744, p=.0001). It was also found that BI score was correlated with the BMI(r=.908, P=.0001) and Broca¡¯s index(r=. 892, p=.0001). There was not a significant difference in monthly income and parent¡¯s obesity level between overweight group and non-overweight group. In addition, there seems to be an close relationship between self evaluation of body size and the BMI/Broca¡¯s index.

Conclusion: FRS and BI were useful tools for evaluating obesity levels.
